How It Works

Learn it in five minutes.

Before you start

  1. Get your account

Your administrator creates it. There is no sign-up form.

  2. Sign in with Google

Use the Google account for your staff email, or your email and password.

  3. Start from Home

It shows what needs you today: marking, missing work and families to contact.

01

Set Up a Class

Create a class

  1. Open Groups and press New Group.
  2. Give it a name, a subject and a school. Your name is filled in as its teacher.
  3. Press Keep the Defaults on the rest, then Create.
Good to know
  • Nothing is saved until you press Create, so closing the wizard leaves nothing behind.
  • Change any of it later from Settings beside the class name.
  • Only the teacher who owns a class can delete it.

Groups · New Group

Demo

Open Groups and press New Group.

Add students

  1. Press Add Student to type one in.
  2. Or press Link Classroom to import a course's roster.
  3. Press Sync Roster Changes later to pick up joiners and leavers.
Good to know
  • Students you add by hand are never touched by a sync.
  • Each student can have two parent contacts: a name and a phone number.
  • A name you correct stays corrected, even after a sync.
  • A child in two of your classes has a separate row, with separate marks, in each.

Online class and group chat

  1. Press Set up online class on the class page.
  2. Paste the Google Meet or Zoom join link, and the WhatsApp invite link.
  3. Share it with Copy invitation or Add to calendar.
Good to know
  • These are saved links. Nothing creates a meeting or messages anyone for you.
  • Members of a WhatsApp group can see each other's phone numbers.

Take attendance

  1. Turn on attendance in the class's Settings.
  2. Press Take Attendance, mark each student, then save.
  3. Open the same day again to correct it.
Good to know
  • Excused absences count towards nothing, so a family who told you in advance is never chased.
  • A student you have not marked stays unrecorded, never assumed present.
  • On a bad connection the register is kept on your device and sent when you are back online.
02

Set Work and Mark It

Set an assignment

  1. Open a class and press New Assignment. It starts as homework, out of 100.
  2. For an exam, switch to Exam and give each part the marks it is out of.
  3. Press Create Assignment. Homework can also be posted to Google Classroom.
Good to know
  • Not sure? Choose homework. Only homework gets hand-in tracking.
  • Classroom takes plain text, so formatting is removed when it posts.
  • Posting is immediate, so a posted assignment is dated today.

Enter marks

  1. Type marks straight into the grade sheet. It saves by itself.
  2. For a pile of scripts, press Grade Submissions and use Enter to move down.
  3. Press Return to send the marks back to Classroom.
Good to know
  • Mark a student absent, not zero. Absences are left out of the average.
  • Nothing reaches a student until you press Return.
  • Inspect shows the student's work beside the mark box.
  • Half marks are fine.

Demo

Every student is one row. Type the mark straight into the box.

Curve and grade

  1. Open an exam and press Calculate Curve.
  2. Read the T-scores: 50 is the class average, and 10 points is one standard deviation.
  3. Set grade boundaries on the A* to U or the 9 to 1 scale.
Good to know
  • Anyone at or below the first quartile is flagged at risk - the same rule parent alerts use.
  • Absent students are left out of the distribution.
  • Only the class's teacher can set grade boundaries.

Follow Up

Chase homework

  1. Open a class and hand-ins sync from Classroom. Press Refresh any time.
  2. Work reads Not due yet until the deadline, then Missing.
  3. Change a badge by hand, and use the late chip to record how late.
Good to know
  • Your changes are never undone by the next sync.
  • Late with no time given stays Late. It never turns into Submitted.
  • Lateness from Classroom uses the hand-in time, so marking the work does not erase it.

Demo

Before the deadline, work not handed in reads Not due yet.

Message parents

  1. Press Alert Parents. Nothing is sent - it opens a review.
  2. Untick anyone you would rather contact yourself.
  3. Press Send them, or Send by Hand to use your own WhatsApp.
Good to know
  • Missing homework, absences and low results go into one message per student.
  • No family is messaged twice for the same reason.
  • Change the thresholds and the wording in the class's Settings.
  • Stop alerts for one student for good from their edit dialog.

Demo

Press Alert Parents. It opens a review - nothing has been sent.

Post to the class

  1. Open a class linked to Classroom and write on the announcement board.
  2. It posts to everyone in the course.
  3. Delete a post you made here from the same board.
Good to know
  • Classroom does not let any app delete a post made on the Classroom website.
04

Share Results

Export and live sheet

  1. Press Export and choose what goes on the sheet.
  2. Download it as Excel, CSV or PDF.
  3. Or press Update Live Sheet to keep one Google Sheet up to date.
Good to know
  • Your choices are remembered for the next export.
  • In a class linked to Classroom, the live sheet gets a Grades link that the whole class can open.
  • PDF export needs a linked Google account.

Progress reports

  1. On Students, open the report for a student's row.
  2. Pick the stretch of term it covers.
  3. Press Save as PDF or Print, or send it as a WhatsApp message.
Good to know
  • Each mark is printed beside the class average.
  • Use a report rather than the live sheet when a document is for one family.
